According to a new article in MedScape, new research shows that a probiotic extract developed from the human microbiome shows promising results to be a drug-free therapy for treating and preventing atopic dermatitis. Atopic dermatitis is a chronic condition that results in red and flaky skin. Steroids are often used to treat the inflammation caused by atopic dermatitis. However, prolonged use of steroid can have negative effects on not only the skin, but also the body. Lead researcher Eva Berkes, MD, who is developing the product said "[the probiotic] worked very well, equivalently to dexamethasone, yet it is not a steroid."
