New guidelines for Acne from AAD

AAD Issues New Guidelines For The Treatment Of Acne

HealthDay (2/23, Preidt) reports that the American Academy of Dermatology has issued new guidelines for the treatment of acne. In an AAD news release, Andrea Zaenglein, MD, said that “dermatologists have found that combining two or more treatments is the best option for the majority of patients.” She added, “Recommended treatments include topical [skin] therapy, antibiotics, isotretinoin [Accutane is one brand] and oral contraceptives.”

The guidelines did not find “enough evidence to recommend in-office procedures such as laser treatments and chemical peels, alternative therapies such as tea tree oil, or dietary changes.” The guidelines were published online Feb. 17 in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.
