Rosacea FAQ

What is rosacea?

Rosacea is a common skin condition characterized by reddening of the skin. In mild and early cases, you may notice that you tend to blush more easily than other people. With time, the redness expands past your cheeks to include your forehead and nose; the redness may also be present all the time. Your ears, chest, and back can even appear red.

What are the types of rosacea?

You may know rosacea by the redness and visible blood vessels apparent on your skin, but other subtypes exist.

You may have papulopustular rosacea, which involves redness, along with swelling and breakouts that look like acne. Phymatous rosacea makes your skin thicken and develop a bumpy texture. Ocular rosacea may be diagnosed when you have redness and irritation in your eyes.

What are the symptoms of rosacea?

Each type of rosacea has slightly different symptoms. You may experience:

  • Redness, flushing, and swollen skin
  • Broken blood vessels or spider veins
  • Acne-like breakouts
  • Thickening skin, especially on the chin, cheeks, forehead, and ears
  • Eyes that are reddened, dry, sensitive to light, and bloodshot

How is rosacea treated?

The goal of rosacea treatment is to reduce the appearance of symptoms, ease any discomfort, and prevent progression of the condition. At Integrated Dermatology of Tidewater, the team can help you figure out your triggers, such as extreme weather conditions and spicy foods.

You’ll also need to be diligent about using sunscreen and taking special precautions when you care for your skin. Avoid scrubbing with abrasive cleansers or cloths. Some skin care products can also irritate rosacea. The doctors at Integrated Dermatology of Tidewater can recommend the best regimen for your particular condition.

In severe cases of rosacea, they may also recommend oral immunosuppressants or antibiotics. Oral medications are often recommended in cases of ocular rosacea. Although rosacea cannot be cured, its effects can be controlled and minimized.
